Silver Certificates were created to allow an investor to purchase silver without having to take physical possession of the commodity. Certificates were deemed payable to the bearer upon demand. The first releases of the silver certificates notes were a larger size than their subsequent counterparts, which were similar in dimensions to the modern U.S. paper currency in circulation today. Colonial Currency

Colonial Currency was first issued in 1690 by the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Before this the Colonial economy depended largely on foreign coins, barter, and commodity money. Other colonies soon began to issue their own paper currency. Usually denominated in Spanish Milled Dollars, Colonial notes were also denominated in British shillings, pounds, and pence. National Currency

Antique National Currency was printed between 1862 and 1935. As you might expect, the earlier issues are typically rarer than the later issues. The denominations issued were as low as one dollar and as high as one thousand dollars. The five, ten, and twenty dollar denominations were the most commonly available denominations fro practical reasons. Lower denominations were only issued for a short period of time so they are rare. Federal Reserve Notes

The early Federal Reserve Notes were large and bore red and blue seals. Though technically it was the 1928 Series, in 1929 the notes changed (as did all U.S. currency) to the familiar green U.S. Treasury Seal and standard dimension of today. In 1945 the United States stopped printing denominations that were over $100 and in 1969 the $500 bill was actually taken out of circulation. The design was largely unchanged until the 1990s.
