What Determines the Value of Old Paper Money?

The value of paper money depends on more than its face value. Our team considers the note’s age, rarity, condition, denomination, issuing bank or series, serial number, printing errors, and collector demand. Some notes are primarily valued as collectibles, while others may carry historical or numismatic significance.

For the most accurate evaluation, avoid writing on, repairing, laminating, or cleaning old currency. Keep notes in their existing holders or folders when possible, and bring any related documentation with you.

Silver Certificates

Silver Certificates were created to allow an investor to purchase silver without having to take physical possession of the commodity. Certificates were deemed payable to the bearer upon demand. The first releases of the silver certificates notes were a larger size than their subsequent counterparts, which were similar in dimensions to the modern U.S. paper currency in circulation today. These larger certificates were available in a wide range of denominations ranging from $1 to $1,000. … Read More…

Colonial Currency

Colonial Currency was first issued in 1690 by the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Before this the Colonial economy depended largely on foreign coins, barter, and commodity money. Other colonies soon began to issue their own paper currency. Usually denominated in Spanish Milled Dollars, Colonial notes were also denominated in British shillings, pounds, and pence. In 1764, the British declared Colonial currency illegal. Beginning in 1775, the Continental Congress issued currency to finance the war. … Read More…

National Currency

Antique National Currency was printed between 1862 and 1935. As you might expect, the earlier issues are typically rarer than the later issues. The denominations issued were as low as one dollar and as high as one thousand dollars. The five, ten, and twenty dollar denominations were the most commonly available denominations fro practical reasons. Lower denominations were only issued for a short period of time so they are rare. High denominations were costly to save and rarely printed. … Read More…

Legal Tender Notes

A United States Note, also known as a Legal Tender Note, is a type of paper money that was issued from 1862 to 1971 in the U.S. Having been current for 109 years, they were issued for longer than any other form of U.S. paper money. They were known popularly as “greenbacks”, a name inherited from the earlier greenbacks, the Demand Notes, that they replaced in 1862. Often termed Legal Tender Notes, they were named United States Notes by the First Legal Tender Act of 1862. … Read More…

Federal Reserve Notes

The early Federal Reserve Notes were large and bore red and blue seals. Though technically it was the 1928 Series, in 1929 the notes changed (as did all U.S. currency) to the familiar green U.S. Treasury Seal and standard dimension of today. In 1945 the United States stopped printing denominations that were over $100 and in 1969 the $500 bill was actually taken out of circulation. The design was largely unchanged until the 1990s. Additional security features were added in the redesign of the 2004 Series. … Read More…
